Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is a self portrait, it was taken by me in my colleague's office. I was sitting on a chair in front of him. The office was a small one with lighting coming through the window.

Time

I work as a graphic designer and it was our break time. the time was almost at noon. And it was spring time. That means the sun was up in the sky.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect. it was coming through a window, with a 45 degree angle. And because the light was good enough I succeeded taking this shot for myself, using one hand. It is hard to take self photos using this one hand, unless the lighting is good. Remember, your hand may shake when taking such photos, so try to have a quick photo with a fast aperture.

Equipment

I used the D5100 with the default lens 18mm-55mm VR lens. Nothing else.

Inspiration

In fact, I was taking a double selfie. How is that?? Well my colleague was taking a selfie for both of us using his mobile, while I was taking an self portrait using my D5100. And you can see that I was looking at the other camera. And it was hard to handle the DSLR in the opposite direction, but my D5100 allowed me to see the situation using the flipping screen.

Editing

Yes, I almost do post-processing for all the photos I choose. I use Photoshop for processing. I sharpen my photos a little bit, and

In my camera bag

My D5100 or my D5000, small tripod (in the car) Nikkor 18-55mm VR and a Tamron 70-300mm. You can see that I do not have too much equipment. But I am intending to buy a Nikon 50mm 1.8/f D lens, a great lens with low cost (even if it has manual focus), and a remote control, and an extension tube to use the lens as a macro lens. I usually look for cheap equipment, and try to get the most out of them, because I am just an amateur photographer not a professional one, and finally because I have a family I prefer to spend money for.

Feedback

Look for the good lighting. Good lighting doesn't mean necessarily we have to take all our photos when the sun is up in the sky, no. Try to take photos were lighting is in between, not dim nor bright. And Lighting with an angle of 45 degree gives the face one part in the light (about 3/4 of the face space) and another in the shadow (about 1/4 of the face space). Make your focus always on the eyes, because eyes let the portrait speaks. And finally, always remember, even if you have cheap equipment you can make adorable photos.
