Behind The Lens

Location

February is not usually conducive to shooting beach photos in Galveston, Texas. The day that this photo was shot was definitely an exception and it produced a few of my favorite photos...on the spur of the moment. This particular site is on the beach near the east jetty. On a summer day this would be a popular spot, but this day it was just the two of us.

Time

We arrived at this site at about 9:00 a.m. after cruising about ten miles of seawall along Galveston Island. We pretty much knew where we were heading when we left the house; the view once we arrived confirmed our previous thoughts about how this site would look on a very foggy morning. This photo is actually one of the first that we took that morning.

Lighting

The lighting was naturally more interesting than anything I could have set up. The sun was rising behind the subject, the wind was calm and the fog was glowing; the addition of the standing water was an added benefit that I had not planned for.

Equipment

Camera used this day was a Nikon D300 without a flash (although we did break out the flash later in the morning with interesting results). ISO was set at 400 with f/20.

Inspiration

We live on the bay and the fog was in "full bloom" when we woke up that morning. The location where this photo was taken is a favorite spot of mine for photos and I wanted to see what impact the fog was having on the sunrise. Being a lazy Sunday morning we took off to find out.

Editing

Post processing was limited to some minor adjustments in PhotoShop; mainly cropping and converting to black and white (via gradient mapping).

In my camera bag

I use a camera almost daily for work purposes so it gives me a good excuse to have some sort of equipment on me all of the time. I have a few cameras but the Nikon D300 is my roadie; it is an older camera that I take to work with me. I am an Architect and have to shoot photos from stages (or other scaffolding) regularly and the camera takes some hits and it has proven to be a tough old bird! When I am not working I am in the outdoors; the D300 has spent a fair amount of time hanging out in water bag in the bottom of a kayak.

Feedback

In some ways I feel very qualified with a camera and in some ways I feel very average. Many of the shots that I am most proud of are accidents...such as this one. The good news is that "accidents" happen every day and if the camera is handy you will have an opportunity to catch them; and in the digital age there is no excuse for not pulling the trigger. Keep the camera close and pull that trigger.
