Location
I took this photo in my backyard on Long Island, NY. I am lucky enough to have several resident hummingbirds every year. I love that the birds face, a young male Ruby Throated Hummingbird, is so clear in this image. They are challenging to shoot given their small size and speed.Time
This photo was taken in the early afternoon when the sun hits my deck perfectly. It was my first attempt at shooting a hummingbird with a tripod. I do not like to use a tripod, at all. Hummingbirds are fast and not always easy to catch! Luckily they are active for most of the day and provide lots of opportunities.Lighting
When shooting hummingbirds, lighting is everything. They are fast so a high shutter speed is necessary. Of course, a high shutter speed can result in a grainy photo. Getting them in good light is so important. I never use a flash when shooting hummingbirds, I prefer natural light.Equipment
I used my Canon 6D with my Tamron 150-600mm fully extended, on a tripod.Inspiration
I love shooting hummingbirds! They are one of my favorite subjects. I am constantly challenging myself to get their wings frozen and clear. This image does show some motion blur on the wings but the rest of the bird is sharp, I am pleased with the result.Editing
I did some simple editing in Lightroom. I cropped the image and added some clarity. Editing is not my strong point so I usually keep it simple.In my camera bag
I love wildlife photography! My go to for that is my Canon 6D and my Tamron 150-600mm. I also have a Canon 70-200 (2.8), it is one of my favorites and produces high quality images. I also love macro photography. I use a Canon 100mm macro for those images.Feedback
Hummingbirds are not easy to capture but practice makes perfect. I watch them frequently and learn their behaviors so I can anticipate their movements. I also have feeders strategically placed throughout my property. In addition, I plant flowers specifically for them. There is nothing like a natural shot of a hummingbird getting nectar from a flower. They are mysterious beautiful creatures
