Behind The Lens

Location

This image was Taken at Talgarth Asulym in Mid Wales, UK.

Time

It was taken around mid day. Time was limited as it's about an hours drive from my home and I did have other locations to visit on the same day. I didn't have the option of waiting until the light was different but it already suited the image I had in my head.

Lighting

As this was taken when photography was relatively new to me, I didn't understand lighting as I do now and was very fortunate to capture this image with relatively tidy natural light.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon EOS600D and the 18-55mm kit lens. It was the widest angle lens I owned at that point and due to the actual area it was taken in (there was a Church directly behind me) I only just managed to get it all in one shot.

Inspiration

I've a love of old buildings and enjoy urbex type photography when I have the opportunity. The intention when visiting this location was to get inside but as I couldn't do that I still wanted to take some dramatic images of the outside as I love the fact that this building is rather spooky.

Editing

The only real processing I did was to the sky and clouds. The original image had a very bright sky as it was a sunny day so I did alter the colours slightly and used the burn tool in Photoshop to add some drama to the sky.

In my camera bag

I normally carry around my Canon EOS600D, a Canaon 50mm f1/8, Sigma 17-70mm, Sigma 70-300mm, Tamron 55-200mm and two speedlight type flashguns. The Sigma 17-70mm is my standard walk around lens, the 50mm is because of my love of portraits and a fantastic lense for Bokeh. I also have a remote trigger for the flash, a remote for the camera and depending on the shoot, either my laptop or Nexus tablet.

Feedback

The only thing I can suggest is to invest time in finding interesting locations. Don't be too put off by no entry signs (most of them are for your own safety and nothing else) and don't be afraid to explore intersting looking places.
