Location
This photo was takien outside of the holiday house of a friend in France. It's a beautiful and quiet place. Surrounded by a lot of nature and no people around. We were shooting a lot all around the area the whole day, but I actually took this one when we were finished and settled for a drink in the evening.Time
I like this photograph a lot because for me it shows the solitude of this place, especially in the evenings. We were tired from the day as we were exploring the surroundings and photographing. We sat down in front of the house, lit the candles and pourred ourselves a drink and were just enjoying the evening. When I saw my friend sitting there, lost in thoughts I couldn't resist taking out my camera again. I love this kind of mood in portraits where the subject gets lost a little in the dark of the night, but at the same time the person is very visible to me.Lighting
The lightning was difficult, as there were only the candles on the table and I had already put away my tripod. I didn't want to go and get it as I was afraid when I come back the athmosphere might have changed. I only pulled the candles a little closer to have better light in the face and tried to then tried to work with that.Equipment
I used a Canon 500D and a 50mm 1.4 lense from Canon.Inspiration
I would say the peace of the moment - or maybe the look on my friends face. I don't remember exactly. Maybe it was that I thought by photographing my friend I could show how I felt there in this moment.Editing
When I took the photo I didn't have a workflow on editing. So I would usually correct the white balance and then play around with some colours - in the end I often didn't exactly know how I got there. In my camera bag
I have a Canon 6D now, and mostly I pack my 50mm 1.4 lense. As I always use light which is already there I don't have a flash and I only take a tripod if I know that I'm going to need it. I like to be spontanous and not to carry around tons of gear but I'm looking forward to getting more fixed lenses.Feedback
For me the most important ist light because it decides all about the mood. Before setting up any additional lights maybe think about what parts of your subject you want to be seen and why. For this photograph I wasn't sure at all if it worked out with the little light from the candles but it turned out just the way I like it.
