Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small community, Grate's Cove, Trinity Bay, in a Canadian Province, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Time

It was taken in the afternoon during the summer of 2012.

Lighting

Photography was still new to me and I was only going to be in this little fishing village for another little while, so I didn't particularly pay too much attention to the lighting. It was an overcast day.

Equipment

I had recently purchased my Canon EOS Rebel T3i camera with the 18-55mm lens and I was still learning how to capture the best pictures. I took these pictures several different ways, until I was able to capture the details of both inside the cabin and outside the window.

Inspiration

I was standing in a little tourist attraction cabin, situated in a little fishing village, Grate's Cove. The little cabin, that was filled with old fishing tools used years ago, had opened windows that were facing the bay, Trinity Bay. I thought it would be great to take a photo of the contents, hanging on the walls, inside the cabin, which also reflected the scenery through its windows.

Editing

I snapped several pictures of the windows at different times. I needed to get both details of the contents of the walls and the scenery outside. After viewing all my photos I chose the best of each window and made a collage of the two photos. It turned out much better than had expected.

In my camera bag

I usually just take my Canon t3i and my 18-55mm lens or my 75-300mm lens. I also take my camera remote switch, because it's light weight and I use it with a tripod to reduce shake.

Feedback

In this case, I couldn't wait for any particular time of day or a particular kind of sky, because I was there just for a very short period of time. I had taken my camera, with my 18-55mm lens attached and nothing else, just hoping to capture the uniqueness of Grate's Cove. For this shot, experimenting in different camera modes until I finally snap the picture that would captured exactly what I wanted, was the key.
