Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at Playa Ostenal in Costa Rica. I was told that this event where the sea turtles come up on the beach to lay their eggs only happens once every three years. I just happened to be there at the right time. And there were literally hundreds of turtles along the beach for as far as you could see.Time
The sun is setting over the Pacific Ocean as the day draws to an end.Lighting
Of course, lighting is always more interesting at the beginning or the end of the day. And sunset photos seem to always work out better when there are a few clouds on the horizon. This wasn't intentional, just good luck.Equipment
I'm pretty sure I just had a cheap Panasonic point-and-shoot with a Leica lens when I took this photo. As someone once told me, "the best camera is the one you have on you". And from my own experience, there is just no substitute for an amazing subject. No special equipment needed.Inspiration
Arriving on the beach and taking in the scene of sea turtles going up onto the beach and back down into the water for as far as the eye can see is enough inspiration to start snapping as many photos as possible. The more you take, the better chance of having at least one turn out really good.Editing
No processing whatsoever. In my camera bag
I am an extremely amateur photographer and just can't afford expensive equipment. I don't even have a DSLR, just a point and shoot with a good zoom and a tripod. Hopefully, I can afford some better equipment one of these days.Feedback
Like I said earlier, there is just no substitute for an amazing subject. Including a body of water gives depth to your photo, creating that expanse between the fore and background. And time of day is crucial. I like taking photos in the evening or early morning, when the sun is low in the sky. A few wispy clouds help with sky color at sunset and sunrise.
