Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture at the Williamson County Fair in Franklin, TN.

Time

It was probably around 2:00 in the afternoon.

Lighting

Although it was in the heat of the day, we were in a covered area where the rest of the farm animals were located.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark III and my Sigma 12-24mm wide angle lens.

Inspiration

I'm an animal lover and this steer was magnificent to see in person. His horns were so impressive. This steer is actually A LOT closer and A LOT bigger than he looks here. For obvious reasons, I could not get too close. I actually put my camera up through the gate and had to snap my photos blindly. I've learned with a wide angle lens, the subject works best in the center and I was thrilled to see that I captured one in the composition I hoped for. Having his eye in focus, too, was an added bonus.

Editing

I did reduce the highlights and brought up the shadows in Lightroom. Since it was in a covered building, the lighting was low inside and the open windows in the background were really bright from the sunlight.

In my camera bag

My Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 24-105mm lens and my Canon 75 - 300mm lens. I had my wide angle lens with me this day in hopes to get some interesting angles on the farm animals.

Feedback

Having the subject in the middle of the composition works best for me with a wide angle lens, especially when it's a person or an animal. I used to be intrigued by the distortion, but now I shy away from it. If you want to capture a photo of a steer, use caution! They don't always want to have their picture taken. :-)
