Location
I took this shot in Singapore by the Marina Bay Waterfront. I had a couple of hours after arriving from the airport to do a mini photoshoot so I headed to the waterfront to do some night shots.Time
I don't remember the exact hour but this was definitely after dinner, way past the magic hour. I had dinner at my hotel then walked out to the waterfront to practice some photography. There were a lot of people seated by the steps all enjoying the scene and I took out my tripod, sat at the edge and took some shots.Lighting
It was night time, so everything was low light photography. Despite the many lights coming from the buildings, I was on the other side of the bay so I had to do long exposure. I also wanted to catch the light trails from the boats, but at that hour, it was not as busy as I wanted. Nevertheless, I was happy with how it came out.Equipment
I used my Nikon D5300, with 13-200mm lens, plus a tripod.Inspiration
I've always wanted to do long exposure to capture light trails in a city setting. What better place than the busy city of Singapore to do this? Most of the time, it's light trails coming from cars or busses, and I did begin my shoot with those shots. But sitting by the bay, I can't help notice the boats moving around, so I thought it would be great to see if I can capture some light trails from the boats, with a perfect city scape as a background.Editing
I shoot in RAW, so I did the normal adjustment of shadow and highlights, clarity and vibrance in Lightroom, which I do with all my photos before posting. In my camera bag
I usually bring my Nikon D5300 with my travel lens and when I go out shooting at night, I would bring my portable tripod. These days, I also have an Olympus micro four-thirds in my bag with a travel lens and a wide lens, which I switch around when need, such as during street photography.Feedback
Style-wise, try to find a unique perspective or style especially when shooting something that is very iconic and probably cliche. This shot was done many years ago when I just started to do photography and thus if I were to do this today, I would probably try to find something more unique to add to my shot, which will eventually differentiate my shot from others. On the technical aspect, use a tripod and employ all possible techniques to make a sharper image. These are some of the things I would do today if I were to redo this shot.
