Location
This photo was taken in Santos, on the coast of the state of São Paulo. A city known for having the largest port in South America and also for being one of the best cities to live in Brazil. But honestly, that part of being the best city to live well is debatable ...Time
It was late afternoon and the sun was setting behind the buildings. A mist came out of the sea creating a very interesting weather. As a lover of good horror movies that I am, when I saw the fog - it was orange because of the sun - covering buildings and this little boy running, I had no doubts. At the time I remembered those movies that talk about the post-apocalypse, and this child made ??me think of hope, new beginning, something good in the midst of chaos and destruction. I know - maybe - we're well away from these scenarios that show movies, but are we not moving towards it? Do not know if you know, but the state of São Paulo (Brazil) is undergoing a crisis of water shortages, unprecedented in the history of the country. Sorry, I digressed and ended up fleeing the answer is simple: It was just another late afternoon where the scenery helped me.Lighting
As said before, this scene reminded me immediately of the horror movies that I like and when I planned the picture in my head, the intention was to make her remember this scenario. And lucky for me I did not need anything more in terms of light. The Sun itself is setting behind the buildings and "igniting" the mist that came from the sea towards the beach was all I needed. I think the picture was ready, just waiting for someone to notice and record.Equipment
I have not - yet - an incredible machine. I have my Canon T4i (autographed by Sebastião Salgado to give me luck) and a 18-135mm lens. In this photo, this was the equipment I used, no flash, no tripod or anything else.Inspiration
It's funny to think of inspiration. I like a lot of photojournalism and get inspired on the work of other great photographers like Sebastiao Salgado area, Bresson, Capa, Evandro Teixeira, Mauricio Lima, and many others, but if there's one thing that is true is that really like Ansell Adams said: photographed with the books we read, movies we see and etc. So I guess it's a matter of looking, keep an open mind and let everything you've lived, read, watched, listened, finally, felt everything that makes you be you, be part of that moment. Or be a little crazy anyway as a friend of mine said: What kind of crazy goes to the beach to see the sunset and think of a photo inspired by horror movies?Editing
For post processing I use Lightroom and the collection of filters Nik Software Google. In my camera bag
Here in Brazil, thanks to taxes, photographic equipment is extremely expensive. For example, a lens that costs $ 3,500, currently priced at 2.5 times our money, not to mention the taxes that can reach 50% of final value. So in this moment I only have my Canon 18-135mm lens with T4i and lots of inspiration and sweat to make the best of it. And I can say with certainty that the equipment is not the same who makes the photo.Feedback
I'm not exactly a professional so complicated I give tips to anyone. As I have said, I have no top line equipment and not used filters, flashes and other equipment. I think the best I can say is: look carefully at what is around you. I usually go almost every day to monitor the beach for the sun, but before going with the intention of shooting it, I'll admire it. And at the right time, the picture goes appear in your head and there you will know it's time to make the photo. Technique is very important, but knowing wonder what happens around you is just as important, if not more.
