The deer are everywhere. Why is it so hard to get a shot like this?? Beautiful.

Thanks everyone so much for your kind words here. It was thrilling to get this shot and gratifying to be chosen by the Viewbug editors.

Location
Cook County Forest Preserve Property near Willow Springs Illinois.Time
Between 12 noon and 1 PM. I would occasionally take my lunch break time and look for photo ops in this particular area, that I could reach easily and quickly.Lighting
I would purposely choose overcast days as I prefer the look of diffused sunlight.Equipment
A Fuji Finepix S-2 pro with a 80 - 400mm VR Zoom. I have a window clamp tripod head that I used and shot this from an SUV, which made for a good "blind".Inspiration
I enjoy nature photography and Whitetail Deer are one of my favorite and most challenging subjects. It helps a lot to get to know their behavior patterns to increase your odds of sightings and shooting opportunities.Editing
The cropping is as shot and the only Photoshop work was to tweak the contrast a bit higher. In my camera bag
For nature photography, in addition to a Nikon D800 with the above zoom lens I carry a veteran manual focus 55mm Micro-Nikkor because I enjoy closeup work in nature also.Feedback
Learn all you can about the animal, bird, or other creature you want to photograph, and use that to give yourself more opportunities to make images of them. This buck was photographed during their rutting period, the peak of which is usually in November in the Midwest, and was near a doe it was "courting". The water droplet on his nose indicates his sense of smell was working overtime. Whitetail bucks loose some of their normally cautious behavior in their pursuit of does ready to mate. And further, this change in behavior can also make them very dangerous to people that get too close as they can attack anything perceived as competition.
