Behind The Lens

Location

I took this Photo in my daughter's backyard in Bernalillo, New Mexico. My 1 year old grandson had pick out his clothes and dresses himself in soccer shirt to match his ball. I just followed him around the yard.

Time

It was a lovely warm morning. While I was sitting about 15-20 feet away he chased the ball around the yard picking up a rock in his shoe. Since he was feeling so independent he removed the rock himself.

Lighting

Beautiful natural morning light had just come over the Sandia Mountains. Taking shots of a toddlers involves following them around and taking advantage of their actions combined with available light. I was sitting on the other side of the yard clicking away my camera. I was blessed to get several great shots that day. This one was the best.

Equipment

I used a Konica Minolta DiMage Z6, which has a great 12x optical zoom and anti-shake. Never have been lucky enough to afford a great camera which has forced me to be more creative. I did not use a tripod or special lenses.

Inspiration

It's so easy to be inspired by children and puppies. You just need a really fast camera and good strong light because they never stop moving. I like to sit a little ways off so they are not posing but acting naturally.

Editing

I usually tweek my photos in Photoshop or even Picasa to appear as I first saw the scene in my memory. I am a really right brained person and remember things as images. I remember when I transferred this series of to my computer they were perfect and really didn't need any help.

In my camera bag

Konica Minolta DiMage Z6, HP Photosmart M627, and great camera on my LG smartphone. They all have strong points and I usually carry all three with me on photo opps. I have a full size tripod and a couple of mini tripods including a gorillapod. I always carry extra batteries and SD cards so if the opportunity presents itself you can keep on shooting.

Feedback

Children are moving targets so be prepared. You'll need a fast camera and good lighting. Make yourself comfortable but keep your camera steady. I was really blessed with perfect light, but I recommend a tripod and a remote shutter release. And just keep clicking. You can always delete any failed ones later. I prefer to have extra memory cards which change out quickly rather than deleting as I go. Too many missed shots while you are looking at bad shots on camera. Plenty of time to delete just before or during transfer to computer.
