This is one of those photos that gives goosebumps. The clarity is outstanding. I love the fading into the right side of frame, as if coming toward me.

Behind The Lens

Location

Photo was taken in Split, Croatia during one of my "bug hunting" photo walks.

Time

It was around 19h as sun was setting down. I usually go for my photo walks around that time, especially during summer, as light is soft and has nice warm tone.

Lighting

Lighting was all natural, I only waited few moments for caterpillar to be in a shadow (diffused light) so there was no shadows from plant or harsh contrast from direct sunlight on caterpillar for better details and colors.

Equipment

Photo was taken with: Canon 550D + Tair 11A manual lens + extension tubes, hand held + girlfriends shoulder for stability :)

Inspiration

I love nature and walking in nature taking photos and noticing small bugs, plants and other details that most of people walk by and never see. I like it best to catch them in their natural environment under natural light and with as much detail as possible so I can admire and study small wonders of nature later. I hope that my photos will maybe inspire or spark interest in others to notice and admire them also.

Editing

This is stack of five photos as combination of lens and extension tubes gives very shallow depth of field. Usually I try to take one photo but I wanted bigger depth of this caterpillar to show more details like its front claw-like legs, teddy bear-like middle legs and breathing holes on a side, colors and texture. Other than stacking I did minor adjustments in raw files and slightly cropped final stacked photo.

In my camera bag

Camera 550D, Samyang 8mm, Tamron 70-300mm VC, Mir-1, Helios 44-2, Tair 11A and few m42 extension tubes... I like old Russian manual lenses and have few more but this is my usual walk around bag content.

Feedback

When photographing small things first and most important thing is to notice them. I know this sounds "well duh!" but once you start noticing you will be surprised how much you were missing before. Other important thing is how different you have to think how to take a shot, composition...etc. when your whole scene is from few millimeters to few centimeters wide, and slightest wind or shake can ruin your shot... Now go out and take photos!
