Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken under Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska.

Time

This photo was taken at about 7pm at night.

Lighting

As far as lighting we got very lucky. I used two off camera Canon 600 EX flashes to brighten up the groom on manfrotto flash stands. I purposely positioned the bride and groom directly under a glacial moulin. This allowed natural light to brighten up the bride and the groom. This photo was taken in one shot.

Equipment

I shot this photo using a Canon 5D3, and a Canon 24-70mm 2.8V2. I also used 2 Canon 600 EXRT triggered with ST ET R3 Trigger. I am a huge fan of the integrated proprietary remote flash capabilities of the Canon gear.

Inspiration

This photo is the exact story of the bride and groom. These two are from Juneau, Alaska and met as volunteers for the Juneau Mountain Rescue Group. Each week these two, along with other members, trained in remote rescue. If someone got in trouble or hurt in a remote area to include Mendenhall Glacier, these two would come get you. Over the weeks and months of training, these two cultivated their relationship. I have been lucky to shoot wedding photos with the glacier in the background. I have even been spoiled by taking helicopters to the top and taking photos on the glacier, but when it came time to tell this couples wedding story, it had to be inside the glacier. Knowing that I was sticking to the fundamentals of telling the clients story kept the concept very simple.

Editing

Post processing was very simple and clean. To be honest, I love shooting with Canon because the color profiles are amazing. Getting it done right in camera generally doesn't leave much to post process. I don't spend a lot of time in Lightroom other then cataloging, nor do I spend a lot of time in Photoshop. With that, I did take some extra time in Canon's DPP software to perfect the exposure and preserve the color profile applied by my camera. I exported it and put it into Lightroom and did apply the proper white balance to the glacier, the couple, and the cave. Have 3 different light sources including flash, sunlight and the darkness of the cave made it important to find common balance.

In my camera bag

Normally in my bag I carry (not to remote areas like this too heavy!) 2 Canon 5d3 bodies. Canon 16-35 2.8 v2, Canon 24-70 2.8 v2, Canon 70-200 2.8 v2, Canon 85 1.2 v2, Sigma 35 1.2 (Love this lens!) 4 SB600EXRT Flashes, tons of polarizers and filters. Can't get enough of graduated filters in the field. I also have been using a combination of Think Tank Airport bags when I travel and need security to lock my stuff up, and FStop backpacks.

Feedback

I think the most important take away from viewing a photo like this is to keep it simple. Don't get so overwhelmed with what soft box does what, or what product does that. I had a simple job, to tell the bride and grooms story in a way that meant something to them. I used to flashes, and natural light. A friend once told me that a professional photographer can capture something out of nothing. They know there gear inside and out and can make something amazing. Know your gear. Keep it simple.
