Location
This photo was made near Cape Canaveral National Seashore in Florida.Time
This is one of my favorite images, I receive a lot of compliments and questions about this one. The most popular question is "Where did you see this painting"! It's definitely not a painting though, it was taken during a sunrise walk on the beach. The sunrise was a bust because of very heavy cloud cover, so I switched to beachcomber mode. Unless it's actively storming and/or extremely windy, I always have my camera with me.Lighting
The lighting was very soft thanks to the clouds which thankfully started to break up and move West a few hours after sunrise. The clouds are light and wispy in contrast to the turbulent wave and give a nice balance to the image which is more than I can say about my own balance while shooting this photo. The sibling to this wave is out of the frame and wasn't very big but there was enough water to remove a large amount of sand from beneath my feet. I was able to capture this wave just before I was bathed in the Atlantic Ocean while holding the camera over head.Equipment
Nikon D90, Nikon 55-200mm DX, handheldInspiration
I live in Florida and I spend as much time at the beaches as I possibly can. I have always been fascinated with the ocean and its beauty during storms and finally had an opportunity to catch stormy weather on a visit. I wasn't expecting to see many waves this day however, I passed a group of surfers lamenting over the small waves north of this spot, when I passed them on my way out, I showed them my picture and they practically ran down the beach with boards in tow.Editing
This image needed very little post-processing. I straightened the horizon (I was falling when the shutter snapped) and restrained to crop, dropped the exposure a tiny bit and enhanced the overall contrast. In my camera bag
I travel exclusively for work so I have all my gear with me but depending on what my subject(s) will be it's usually the D700 with Sigma 150-600 Contemporary or the D600 with Sigma 50mm Art.Feedback
The characteristics of any location will vary based on season, weather and terrain. Familiarity over time will give you a better idea of the conditions you'll need for the shot you are planning. I expected waves with this storm but I didn't know about the steep incline of the beach which boosted the height of the waves making them taller than the tiny ones at the other end of the beach.
