Behind The Lens

Location

Maryland State Fair, Timonium, Maryland

Time

Just after dark - approximately 7 PM

Lighting

For me the trick with Fair lighting is all about the timing. All the rides have lights, after dark you can use longer exposures to achieve the desired effect. I like using the light of the ride to show the movement.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark II, 24-105 Canon L series (it's my lightweight walk-around lens) and because of the volume of foot traffic, I used a monopod with legs.

Inspiration

Who doesn't love a fair; the lights reminded me the joy I experienced as a kid when it got dark and seeing everything glowing.

Editing

I almost always do minor adjustments in either photoshop or lightroom. Since I shoot raw, I always tweak a little in CS6, particularly sharpening. Luminosity can be reduced as well to really make the lights pop.

In my camera bag

I seem to always have spare batteries and cards, batteries are especially important when shooting at night and working on longer exposures. My 24-105 is my walk around lens but I do occasionally pack a fisheye as well. I have a lightweight backpack when traveling in crowds, and I always check to see if a bag policy or tripod policy is in place. If it is - I pack a vest. If I can set up a tripod, I also carry a cable release and several different types of ND filters. Since I shot this I've graduated to walking around with my canon 5D Mark III and 28-300 Canon lens; in which case I still carry my 24-105 and usually a nifty 50 (50 mm fixed lens).

Feedback

Find a good spot when shooting this type of shot, out of the way of all the fair goers. Think about what type of motion you want to capture - each ride has its own characteristic. I shot in bulb mode and check the image playback, experimenting with the length of the exposure until I got the effect that I wanted. Stopped down the lens to keep the image from getting washed out by all the lights, and had a good sturdy support for the camera. I avoid camera shake by using an attached cable/shutter release. -
