Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Sunset Beach North Carolina.

Time

The time of day was close to 10:00 am.

Lighting

The lighting wasn't great, but a storm was rolling in which created a really dramatic sky as the clouds raced across the sky.

Equipment

For this shot I used a Canon T2i with the Sigma 10-20mm lens with the B&W 110 ND filter attached. The camera was mounted on a 3 Legged Thing Adrian Tripod and a Promote Control was used for the extra long exposure time 120 seconds.

Inspiration

That morning I was relaxing on the beach just like any morning during vacation until the weather started turning bad. Lighting was striking out over the ocean and everyone was packing up and heading home. I on the other hand noticed the opportunity to have the beach all to myself for some nice clean photographs. With that in mind I ran back to our rental house and grabbed my gear and ran back to the beach as fast as I could.

Editing

I processed this photo strictly in Lightroom 4 by just adjusting the white balance and a slight contrast adjustment using a gradient.

In my camera bag

These days I have two bags in my Mindshift 180 you can normally find my Canon 6D and Canon 60D with lenses like the 17-40mm F4L, 70-200mm F4L, 50mm 1.4 and the 100mm F2.8. Along with a collection of B&W and Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filters, Graduated ND fliters and my Promote Control. My second bag is also a Mindshift 180 that is my lighter bag of the two. In this bag you can normally find my Sony A7ii and A6000 along with an assortment of Sony and Leica Lenses. The A6000 I use for mainly wildlife, sports and timelapse videos. With either bag I now carry Induro Tripods which to me are hard to beat for the price.

Feedback

The best advice for creating a long exposure photograph like this one is first make sure you're using a sturdy tripod. Then second shoot using the histogram I shot this one in bulb mode and just held the remote in for 45 seconds to start then looked at the histogram, which immediately told me it was too dark. I doubled the time and checked again a little experimenting can go along way and it never hurts to return home with too many photographs.
