Behind The Lens

Location

I took this at the Catawba River in Belmont, North Carolina. This is the boat landing at the river. Sadly they have torn the dock down now. I take a lot of photos at this river.

Time

I was on my way to work early one morning when I took this photo. The fog was moving slowly across the river. Yes, I turned around and went back to the dock to capture it and I might have been a few minutes late for work. Don't tell, ok?

Lighting

The sun was rising behind me so there was no need for a flash or special lighting. I was lucky to capture the exact shot that I wanted. This was perfect for a canvas print that now hangs in my living room.

Equipment

I use a Sanyo camera with 21X optical zoom. No need to use a flash that early in the morning.

Inspiration

I've always been fascinated with fog and mist photography. I love it when there are contest for this subject. Secretly I always hope to capture some vague silhouette or shadow. You know a ghostly figure or something like similar.

Editing

I only cropped this photograph to take the underside of the dock out. The dock was a little beat up and took away from the view of the trees and fog. Love it when a shot comes out near perfect.

In my camera bag

I've only got the Sanyo camera. Unfortunately it got damp when I when I spilled a bottle of water near it. It's kind of got a mind of it's on now. It changes setting on it's own. Slightly possessed I believe.

Feedback

I've found that my best fog photos are taken in the morning in the spring when the water is cold and the sun is rising and slowly heating it up. Get up early and get out there.
