Location
It was a cold day so I decided to keep it indoors in my dining room. It is a small place, just big enough to set up a temporary mini studio. I ended up having to stand behind the bar in my kitchen to use the focal length I wanted, but it was worth it.Time
It was in the evening. I can never predict when my creative bug will bite. Our cat, Pudtard was curious about what we were doing, and as he has a great rapport with us we wanted to include him.Lighting
I wanted a lot of depth and shadow in this image. I didn't use a reflector and use one large octabox up high angled down to get the shadows I wanted.Equipment
My nikon d800 paired with my 85 1.4 is a beast of awesomeness. It gives me tack sharp every time. I used an elinchrom ranger quadra flash head on a stand with a deep octabox.Inspiration
It was time to take my kids' pictures, and I had a vision in mind. Since I don't usually shoot studio, I had to use a brown soft blanket for the background for the effect I wanted. I wanted neutrals and depth. My daughter is often a subject in my images as I can say, "Let's go!" Whenever the inspiration strikes.Editing
I hand edit in Photoshop. I added some overlays and added some flare on the side. Added depth to their eyes and a light matte as well.In my camera bag
I always carry my Nikon gear with me. I have a d800 and d700 as backup, my 85 almost always stays on, especially for shooting children. I also have the 24-70, the 135 2.0, 70-200 2.8, and the 105. I often dream of the 200 f2, but who doesn't. One day...it shall be mine.Feedback
If you are trying to capture a lovely portrait with a lot of depth, use angles. Angle your subjects, angle your lights and soft boxes, angle everything, everywhere. I don't typically use a fill flash or a reflector because I like the depth that the shadows add. Patience is a must, especially when photographing children or animals.
