Behind The Lens

Location

I grew up in a small town in Arapahoe, CO. One of my fondest memories was flattening pennies on the railroad tracks. These are those tracks. I returned to this small town back in 2008.

Time

The one thing I remember about these tracks is how they would glow during sunset. It looked like fire across the plains. This was taken sometime in the autumn months of 2013 just as the sun was setting. This only happens during a certain time of year, and the weather hopefully cooperates as well. Ever since then I've been on the look out to capture another, but have been unsuccessful.

Lighting

This may seem like just an ordinary set of railroad tracks, and indeed they are, but the one thing about these is those tracks don't always glow every sunset. This only happens during a certain time of year. In the early autumn months, and cloud cover is a huge factor of course. The sun has to have a perfect angle, there is only a small window to capture this glow. Yes, these are ordinary railroad tracks, but their glow is something more!

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 with an 18-105mm lens for this shot. The lens is my go to for versatility.

Inspiration

I was coming home one evening and as I reached the top of the hill just outside my hometown I noticed the railroad tracks were burning like the sun. I don't think I'd ever noticed it before, come to find out it doesn't happen that often. So as soon as I got home I grabbed my camera.

Editing

Yes, in order to really capture the dynamics of the glow, I had to set my aperture fairly small, but it ended up blacking all the rocks, so I had to lighten my shadow a bit. I did tweet the sky a bit to add a more dramatic appearance, and finally I added a blur to the surroundings so that the lit tracks were my main focus all the way to the vanishing point.

In my camera bag

I carry two cameras in my bag. Nikon D7100 and a Nikon D5100 with five versatile lenses. A Tameron 70-300mm, Nikkor 18-55mm, Nikkor 18-105mm, Nikkor 55-200, and a neat just for fun lens, an Opera 500-1000mm full manual lens. I have a number of extras in my bag, but these are the basics

Feedback

You don't have to get the picture perfect, you just got to get the main subject the best you can, and not always is the best images unedited, sometimes it takes some tweeking, which is okay, so get out there and take some pictures!
