Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo beneath the local railroad station in the Civil War era town of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The town, rife with our nation's history is a photographers dream. I am a self taught photographer who garners some of my inspiration from viewing others' pics on Viewbug.

Time

This was snapped in the late afternoon.

Lighting

I took several shots as the lighting was varied from dark shadows to bright concrete.

Equipment

I used my Canon rebel, handheld with a 35mm lens.

Inspiration

Inasmuch as Fredericksburg has such a rich history in the development of our nation, and many Civil War battles were waged in this area, the columns of this structure were a metaphor for a line of soldiers guarding this train station.

Editing

I experimented with exposure before deciding on the final image.

In my camera bag

My Canon Rebel T3i, Canon 28-135mm lens, Canon 18-55mm lens, Canon 55-250mm lens, Speedlite 430EX flash

Feedback

I tend to look at subjects from a perspective of how does this differ from the usual capture? What makes it special, and in terms of editing, how can I make it spectacular? One of the keys to getting that perfect shot is multiples--digital photography makes it easy to bracket and take shots from as many angles as possible. Sometimes what seems like an ordinary photo turns into something magical.
