Location
This photo was taken along a rural road in Southern Vermont I pulled over right away to capture the home from a few different angles.Time
Late afternoon in winter.Lighting
The afternoon sun was low casting eerie shadows from bare trees nearby.Equipment
This wasn't a planned photo & used what I had on me which was a Sony a55 (handheld) with the 18-55 lens zoomed in a little. There was no flash, & nothing fancy.Inspiration
The red rusted roof and natural overgrowth first caught my eye as I was driving toward the property. The broken windows sheltering darkness inside fed my imagination as I pulled to the side of the road -- This cool old home just impressed me.Editing
My creative vision really came to life in the post-processing. I used three different exposures created from one photo and combined them together using software to make a tone mapped image. I like this choice in processing because of the way it accentuates the home's texture and brings the rusty colors to lifeIn my camera bag
- DSLR Camera - 3 lenses for different landscape & shooting situations (usually 14mm, 50, & 75-300) - lightweight small tripod - shutter release remote - extra battery - extra memory - lenspen and microfiber cloth - uv filter/misc filter In my home I have a couple backup digital cameras & a small collection of old film cameras - Most of these photos were shot using a Canon or Sony camera - those are my two favorite camerasFeedback
My best advise is to never be without a camera. Simply take it everywhere & every time you leave your home (even if you don't plan on using it) because you never know when you'll see something amazing
