Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken early in the morning just before sunrise on the ferry leaving Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Time

The photo was taken at about 6 Oclock in the morning.

Lighting

The sun was rising to the east of the ferry so the lighting was directly behind the boat. It was very soft light.

Equipment

I was using a Canon 5D Mark ll with a 28x300L lense. The image was taken hand held.

Inspiration

While focusing on the sunrise and the migrating waterfowl I moved to the side of the boat and found myself fascinated by the patterns in the sea water as it moved away from the wake of the ferry. The color was so soft and beautiful I just had to take a few shots.

Editing

I shoot in raw so I ran this through lightroom with some adjustments to contrast and highlights

In my camera bag

Today I shoot most of my landscapes with a Canon 1DX. My lenses vary from the 28x300 for versatility to a 100x400 and a 100mm macro. I also us a 24x105 regularly as well as a 16x35mm.

Feedback

I focus on repeating patterns when shooting water. I usually have a polarizer on as well. I pay attention the the angle of my camera to the water.
