I was out exploring local countryside for photo opportunities. I really had no experience shooting cows before, so this was a new (and exciting) experience for me.Time
I started my countryside tour in the morning. When the fog finally broke, I noticed these cows grazing in a nearby pasture. They were all near the fence which made them very accessible for photos. The nice thing about cows is that their curiosity usually gets the best of them and they can't help but check out your camera gear!Lighting
At this point in time the sun was fairly high in the sky and there were no clouds in sight. The lighting was very harsh, so it was difficult to avoid shadowing. Luckily a nearby tree provided some shade so I was able to snap a clean photo of the nose with even light.Equipment
I shot this photo several years ago with my very first dslr. It was a Nikon d3100 with the kit lens (18-55mm), so the crop sensor got me that much closer for the shot, and it gave me a nice depth of field to bring the focus to the cow's nose rather than the rest of the body.Inspiration
When you get a new camera it is such an exciting time. This is especially true when you are new to the world of photography. You begin to see the world around you with new eyes, and you strive to see the world differently than everyone else. In the countryside, it's easy to take landscape photos as Since this was my first experience taking photos of cows, it was a really cool experience for me. Their curiosity and hilarious personalities allowed me to get more comfortable with getting closer to the subject and filling the frame more efficiently.Editing
I wanted to bring out the warmth of the day, so I slightly boosted the greens and the reds to capture the mood of the warm summer day. I also cropped the photo slightly to bring everything in tighter into the frame, but not to the point where all of the bokeh in the background was eliminated. I also sharpened the image slightly to really accent the wrinkles in the nose.In my camera bag
At the time, my equipment was very limited. I had my Nikon D3100 with the kit lens (18-55mm), and the 35mm f/1.8. As I progressed and grew in my skills, I slowly began purchasing new equipment to deal with different situations. Today I use a Nikon D800 with the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8, the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8, an sb-600 speedlight, and an sb-900 speedlight. This takes care of most of the photo opportunities that I face on a daily basis, and there are rarely times where I need any more equipment than this.Feedback
The countryside offers many photo opportunities. Whether seeking great landscape opportunities, or you want to get up close and personal with farm animals, there are many opportunities to capture a great shot. The most important thing about photographing cows is safety. Make sure you have a fence between you and the animals at all times in case there is an angry bull lurking around! Also be respectful of farmland and private property, and make sure you don't spook the animals. Most importantly, don't be afraid to get up close and personal! Look at the world around you much closer and you will find that there are many unique shots you can capture in some of the most common day-to-day situations.
