Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was a result of almost landing in the ditch during a nasty snow storm. After I almost took out a sign trying to get to work, I figured it was safer to stay home. So I hiked instead! I explored the backwoods for about an hour before finding the creek.

Time

This was taken around 10 am on a snowy, cold day. The cloud cover made for perfectly diffused lighting.

Lighting

The clouds were my diffuser and it was pretty dark from the storm. It was great because it made everything very even and I was able to get the snow and the shadows without any clipping.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3100 with the kit lens 18-55mm on a gorillapod with a remote.

Inspiration

I really just wanted to explore the woods after my close call on the roads. It was peaceful and the melodic rush of the falls was very calming. I liked the composition, the rush of the falls, and snow covered trees.

Editing

I adjusted the white balance for the snow, increased contrast and darkened the shadows.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon 85mm f/1.8 and my 35mm f/1.8. Other than that, usually extra memory cards, my gorilla pod, snacks, water...lots of random things.

Feedback

The stormier the better! I've been out trying to get waterfalls when it's sunny and the water is always blown out. There have been cloudy days where the sun peeks out and then you get hot spots. So the first thing to remember is always wait for cloud cover before you take the shot. I've stood ankle deep in frigid, Spring water just waiting for that one cloud to pass over the sun! Composition is also important, take your time, don't rush. I spent a good hour in this location trying different angles and shutter speeds. Walk around, keep your eyes open, and take more than one shot.
