Behind The Lens

Location

Surfing with Flare was shot in La Jolla, US. The surfer passed by just as the setting sun was at the right angle.

Time

This is near sunset on a summer day.

Lighting

Obviously the key here was the sun providing a nice flare. Those can be tricky but I love the way it created an angle that intersects the angle of the surfboard.

Equipment

This was shot with an iPhone 14.

Inspiration

I regularly do what I call beach street photography, looking for anything impromptu that comes up on the sand or surf.

Editing

There was minimal post-processing in camera.

In my camera bag

Not much back then. Just iPhone will travel. Now I’ve gotten a Nikon 5500, a few lenses, and a tripod. But I still venture out sometimes with just my iPhone.

Feedback

Shooting straight into the setting sun before actual sunset is a gamble. Lots of images will be too blown out. But sometimes you’ll catch gold.
