What I have to say about lighting is that I know lighting is important and can often significantly change the way a photo looks. As often as possible us photographers should be intentional about understanding light and do what we can to get photographs in the best light possible. I also am one that when an opportunity presents itself that isn't an everyday occurrence I take the shot, understanding that the lighting could potentially make it undesirable in the end. However modern software can do a lot these days, so there is no reason not to try.Equipment
I had a d5300 with a 35 - 120mm kit lens that came with the camera. I was laying down just next to the field where the combine was harvesting.Inspiration
I grew up on a farm. I love farm machinery and am nostalgic to the farm life. While I didn't end up following in my Dad's footsteps, it still is a part of me. Sometimes I go out into the country and drive past farms and fields to see what I can find that can be seen from the roads.Editing
Yes, I've never intentionally tried to hide what I do to a photo. Beyond the normal contrast, color, highlight, lighting, structure, etc, adjustments, I used luminar 4 to replace the sky. This can be controversial, but when out and about we don't always get to pick the sky. I think sky replacements are a different kind of editing than completely manipulating the subject of a photo. Maybe that is semantics and I certainly understand other people points of view. But this happens to be mine. When I got this picture of the farmer harvesting, I usually don't get an opportunity to get this close. So I took the shot and spiced it up a bit with a better sky.In my camera bag
I have since upgraded from my D5300 that I took this with. I now have a nikon D780 and a D500. The D780 typically has a nikon 28 - 80 lens and I have a 200 -500 nikon lens on the D500. Standard tripod and various filters.Feedback
Best advise is to learn local harvest seasons for crops in your area and get out there during those times and drive the country side and see what you can find. There won't be a "schedule" for this, but you can narrow it down to a time frame where most farmers will be out in the fields harvesting.
