Behind The Lens

Location

Between my townhouse in Frederick, Maryland, and the Monocacy River is a flood plain that is covered in reeds, grass and trees, and home to all manner of wild life, including the herd that this white tail deer is a member of..

Time

This photo was taken at around 3:30 in the afternoon.

Lighting

It was a partly cloudy day with the sun about halfway down in the west. The cloudiness softened the shadows on the animal as well as the surrounding landscape.

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel T7 with a 35-300 mm zoom lens for this shot.

Inspiration

I carry my camera with me almost every time I leave the house just in case I see an animal or bird, especially when I walk in the vicinity of the river. Deer are often around, but this was the first time in nearly a year I'd seen one out in the open like this. I was far enough away not to be seen as an immediate threat but, like the deer, I was out in the open and easy to see. It stopped grazing and was staring at me, an invitation to take the photo.

Editing

I did a little cropping to more effectively place the deer in the frame, increased contrast, and sharpened the image. Other than that, this was what having the camera set on autofocus for action shots does.

In my camera bag

Since all my camera equipment was destroyed in a fire in 2021, I've been slowly replacing it. I now have the Canon Rebel T7, three lenses (the two that came with it and a manual 500 mm telephoto lens with a 2 X converter and a UV filter. In addition, my bag has my battery charger and lens cleaning kit.

Feedback

My advice to anyone looking for shots like this is to always have your camera handy and be prepared to react when you see a scene like this. Manual focus is possible, but setting the camera on autofocus for action shots, which gives a fast shutter speed, and will enable you to snap off shots without having to fumble around with things like focusing. I use center focus rather than area focus, to make sure my main subject is what the camera establishes point of focus on.
