Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a local park. The tree still exists and can be viewed at Redwood Park

Time

The photo was taken in the afternoon hours when the sun lit the tree at the right angle

Lighting

I wanted the light to highlight the sheer size of the tree, the texture of the bark in comparison with the person behind the tree. The branches stretched quite far from the trunk. The light in the field behind the tree helped to put more emphasis on the main subject.

Equipment

This was a freehand shot using Sony A7 with the 24-70@24mm lens f/6.3 1/80s ISO 200

Inspiration

Many times I went for a walk in that park. But once I spotted that tree, I knew I have to photograph it. The size of the tree stood out with the sunlight enhancing the branches. We destroy so many trees every year and this one is the old faithful witness.

Editing

The original photo required some adjustments, first of I did a global adjustment then I went to brush on a bit lighter on the tree bark. Slightly dehazed the whole image

In my camera bag

I carry with me a Manfrotto, travel tripod, the main mirrorless camera body, Sony A7 with 24-105mm f/4 lens, I also use CPL filter and the ND graduated filter with a soft edge

Feedback

Take your time. Study the landscape. Find your main subject. Try to keep it simple. Quite often I use my iPhone to study the landscape to see it in a different way. Sometimes to compose my final output.
