Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Macau in the surroundings of a hiking trail in an area of a natural park.

Time

If I remember well this was done late in the afternoon when natural light was not so intense anymore and that a warm sunset light partially illuminated the scene.

Lighting

This photo was done solely using natural light, so no other light source or even reflectors were used.

Equipment

Canon EOS 7D MKII Sigma 24-104 f/4 Art lens

Inspiration

This photograph is part of a series that aims to portray the reconnection of people with nature and with their own selves after years of isolation due to covid-19 restrictions. It's about relinking, finding the loose strings, and tying them again so we do not lose our pace and way of life. In Macau (particularly) covid-19 measures were very harsh and restrictive and separated people and families from each other for almost 3 years. There was also a massive spike in suicide cases due to mental illnesses related to this isolation and disconnection.

Editing

The original photo was taken in sRGB colors and then post-processed into greyscale. Also, minor adjustments on contrast were made.

In my camera bag

Before my Canon EOS 7D MKII, nowadays a Canon EOS R7. I am now carrying the kit lens of that camera (always) and additionally, I have normally an EF 50mm 1.4 an EF-S 24mm f2.8, or a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art, of course, and the lens adapter.

Feedback

Find the right setting and the right time of the day (light time) that you want. This was shot in a place where there is often a lot of circulation of people and of course, it was complex to do it without anyone spotting it. So this had to be done very fast. In briefs 5 or 10 minutes maximum. For each scene, I had 2 to 3 shoot at the most so the preparation was everything.
