Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at Hafelkar the "Top of Innsbruck" in Austria.

Time

When I first planned to take the cable car to the top of the mountain and wait for the sunset, I didn't know that I was getting one of my favorite pictures. All the components came together the 5th of november 2021 at 16:40.

Lighting

The light was perfect. The sky was a bit cloudy and the sun was right inbetween the clouds at the moment it started to move behind the mountains and set.

Equipment

This shot was taken with the iPhone 12 Pro and the app PeakFinder helped me to tell me the right time and place for this amazing sunset.

Inspiration

While I was standing at the peak, talking to some students from Luxembourg and waiting for the right moment to capture the sunset, I saw that these yellow billed choughs were always landing on the same spots, supporting the leading line of my composition. These birds were used to people, so I decided to approach them with my wideangle lens. But for some reasons they always flew away. Happily they returned, so I had to change my plans. Knowing that I could approach them without my camera, I took my iPhone out of my pocket, switched to the 0,5 lens and I moved as closely as I could get, holding the phone infront of my stomach. So I took the shot that you are seeing now.

Editing

Back into my car, I immediately post-processed the picture on the phone in my Lightroom app. The usual local adjustments as linear gradiant in the sky and on the bottom and circular gradiant which amphasizes the sunset. Some brush strokes as dodge and burn to draw the viewers attention on the right places. Et voilà the final result.

In my camera bag

Usually I always have too much in my bag, because I'm afraid that I might have missed out to bring a lens with me. In my bag are two cameras, the Canon EOS R5 and the Canon EOS R as backup. My favorite lenses for landscape photography are the RF 15-35mm f2.8 and the RF 70-200mm f2.8. Occasionally I bring also my RF 100-500mm. I am also sure that my recent purchases, the RF 24-70 f2.8 and the Samyang 24mm tilt-shift, will also find their way into the bag. Something that shouldn't be left at home is my PeakDesign tripod with a Acratech Pano Head or my costum built tripod from Henry Hudson. A must have are also my ND filters from Haida.

Feedback

If you have the opportunity to be in Innsbruck, don't hesitate to go to the "Top of Innsbruck" either by hiking up there or by cable car. At snowy times don't forget to bring spikes along as it might be very icy. It takes some effort to hike the last meters to the peak but worth every moment of an amazing view.
