Behind The Lens
Location
I took this about a half hour from my house at a place called South Willow Canyon. It is just outside Grantsville, Utah.Time
This was taken early in the morning. The canyon it is in faces east so when I take the pictures when the sun comes up it is at my back so I don't have worry as much about the light being right in my lens for the long shots.Lighting
I try to go earlier in the morning so I can get longer shots without blowing highlights and all.Equipment
I have a Canon 80D and I used my 18-55mm kit lens. Working on getting an L series sometime but the little kit lens does pretty good. I have a tripod and an ND variable filter.Inspiration
I have always wanted to take pictures. Naturally, dreams of National Geographic and Sports Illustrated have rolled around in my noggin since I was little. Never had a nice camera until 2010 when I got a Canon 450D. It wasn't bad but I could never get good stuff. Always wanted to do wildlife and slow water. Finally got an ND filter and started messing with slow water, lots of bad stuff in the beginning. Kept trying and figured it out a little better and now I can get decent stuff without taking dozens of shots hoping to get one that works. I have an 80D now and it does better. Not Nat Geo yet but I'm working on it.Editing
Not very good at post stuff. I just use Canon editor and adjust shadows or highlights a bit but that's about it.In my camera bag
I have way too much stuff in my bag. It's way heavy. I have my 80D with my 100-400 L attached most of the time. My new lens that I can't get enough of. It's amazing. Then I have my 18-55mm, 60mm macro. 430EX II flash and a bunch of other stuff to take as much space as possible and make my bag even heavier. The usual chargers, remote triggers, LED panel, batteries, and etc....Feedback
Tripod and ND filter. Before I got my filter I went really early in the morning before the sun came up and managed to get a few longer shots, 10 to 15 seconds. But once the sun starts to come up it's hard to get anything more like 3 or 4 seconds, and that's pushing it. My little variable filter was 20 bucks on Amazon and it is amazing. K&N filters. For the money can't go wrong. Then it's just a matter of finding what you want to take a picture of and adjust you settings to get the longer exposure. I like getting from 15 to 30 seconds to really smooth the water out.
