Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of me was taken by the balcony at home in Moscow Russia. I was just playing around with a mask during this quarantine time and was trying to see in what creative ways I could use it for my photography.

Time

During the short ~30 min window of sunlight that I can get during the day thanks to the awesome position of our house and the only window facing the backyard surrounded by tall buildings blocking all view whatsoever.

Lighting

This was the most amount of light I could possibly get during the day from my window. It was a true prime time though and I was really lucky to get it considering the fact that several previous days were gloomy and cloudy, so I could not get any light at all.

Equipment

Just my Canon 7D + Canon L 35mm

Inspiration

An image from some photographer on Instagram that my wife showed me. That photographer is really creative and inspiring. She makes photography tutorials and shares her tricks, techniques and ideas which inspired me to try something new.

Editing

Yes, did some basic retouching, color correction and other slight changes to the color. I really wanted to emphasize my eyes, but I went a little bit further with it by playing with different colors and, actually, changing the color of my eyes. I liked it way more this way. Beyond other things it added a nice touch to overall atmosphere of the photograph.

Lumix GX85 with Panasonic Leica 25mm, Lumix 20mm. Canon 7D with Canon L 35mm Canon A-1 with Canon 50mm Gorillapod.

Feedback

Never stop learning, always experiment with photos, ideas, techniques, etc. Try to make something new of the same old surroundings and objects. Try to find something special in mundane. Do not be afraid to fail and make mistakes, on the contrary, make mistakes and always learn from them, and then move on. Be open-minded and willing to go where you haven't been before mentally and physically. It is all about started doing something no matter what it is or what it may seem to be at first. Photography is all about the process. Without the right process you will never reach any destination. Once you tap into that special kind of creative energy and get into the state of flow you will start unleashing your true potential and will see that your final images would not have been possible without all those trials and errors.
