Behind The Lens

Location

On day 16 of the shelter-in-place COVID19 quarantine, we decided we needed something uplifting. The front window at our home became just that, as we filled it with colorful hearts for good cheer and encouragement.

Time

This photo was taken in the early afternoon, and it was a pretty cloudy and overcast day. I liked the moody look it gave to the image, especially considering the state of the pandemic we're currently in. It fits the circumstance.

Lighting

The lightning was soft and natural.

Equipment

This was shot with my Pentax K3 II. I used my 24-70 mm lens, and shot at ISO 400, F4.0, 1/160.

Inspiration

I asked my girls what they thought about everything going on with the Corona virus. I realized I hadn't really gotten in their heads to see what they were thinking and how much or little they realized was going on. My 7 year old replied, "Some good, some bad. The bad is people are sick, my dance recital is cancelled, and we can't go to Florida anymore." Then she surprised me with her list of the good. She said, "We get to do school at home with you, I get to eat lunch with you and Sister and Daddy, I see Daddy more since he works from home, I get to watch (more) tablet, I get to play outside more, we get to play together more, we get to make notes for the neighbors to make them happy, and we get to do more crafts." Through the eyes of a child. I wanted to document this time in their lives. This global pandemic that is affecting so many, everyone really in one way or another. And THANK YOU to all of the healthcare workers, truck drivers, mail carriers, and grocery workers keeping us all going.

Editing

For this image, I adjusted Curves, played with blacks and contrast, and ran Portraiture.

In my camera bag

My camera bag typically has my Pentax K3 II, 35mm, 50mm, 24-70mm lenses, as well as a back up batteries and extra memory cards. And I always have some tissue; I'm like an old lady and need to always have tissue on hand! It might not even be for me, but for my clients and their kiddos with that constantly running nose! They appreciate it.

Feedback

If you want to capture similar pictures of your kids, I recommend trying to do so at different angles. In my image, I was standing on the loveseat so I could get myself high enough over them. Getting really low to the ground or at their level makes a world of different in photos of kids and what you capture in an image. Give your kids at activity or basic instruction to do something so they'll be occupied while you take some photos. Don't try and make them smile or look a certain way, just stick with them doing an activity while you capture them. That will give you the realness you're looking for in your photo.
