Location
This photo was taken on a family vacation in September 2019 on a resort beach near to Tulum MexicoTime
Time of day would have been roughly somewhere between 05:45 and 06:30 am unfortunately we were not at the right side in Mexico to see a sunset which is my favourite time to shoot so I had to flip my thinkingLighting
I quickly worked out in the holiday that we wouldn’t be able to catch a sunset from our location So in order to get decent light I had to experiment and I returned for many days with different cloud cover and conditions until I hit the sweet spot early one morning, some clouds but not low enough to mask the sunlight coming upEquipment
I used an old Fuji Xpro 1 with either a Fuji 18mm lens or 35mm possibly, I didn’t bother with a tripod as wanted to be able to move around easily avoiding groups of people waking/running along the beach, throughout the days I managed to get up early enough I tried lots of different angles and vantage pointsInspiration
I am a sucker for a sunset I live be spiritual element the colours and the changing light, my first thought in a beautiful place is always to find the colours, usually when available clouds enable the morning light to paint themEditing
Tbh I did a little basic processing through lightroom and then tweaking via an iPhone app (flat screen as I find easier to judge the colour strength whereas with my laptop it depends on how far the laptop screen is tilted forward or backwards as to how much colour you can seeIn my camera bag
A Fuji Xpro1 and a couple of Fuji lenses my favourite is the 35mm 1.4 an 18mm and the only other lens i own is a 60mm macro, I do have a decent tripod but I often shoot handheld as I like to be more versatile with angles and move around a lot....Feedback
Keep trying, one day you may get nothing, many in fact but that one day you do makes it all worth while, I must have tried 6/7 days to get the shot I really wanted, research the sunrise or sunset times scout your location, try different angles, for sunset wait up to 15 mins after sunset for the best colours and again at sunrise the 15 mins or so before
