Location
This was actually taken on the concrete on the client's patio. Little Samuel was one week old.Time
It was mid morning by the time we got to this one. We did family portraits first. And when you're photographing newborns, you're pretty much on their schedule. :)Lighting
This particular shot was actually all natural light with a couple of reflectors.Equipment
I shot this handheld, standing over him with my Canon 5D Mark iii.Inspiration
Newborns are difficult to photograph, but they're my favorite. There's something so innocent and beautiful about the beginning of life. These clients were long-term clients of mine and have become good friends.Editing
Actually, I did very little post processing on this. Smoothed the skin a bit, tweaked the coloring and cropped it just a bit. No filters or presets needed. In my camera bag
My bag is always packed with my Canon EOS R, a 430x Canon Flash, with a flash diffuser, a 24-105mm lens, 75-200mm, 50mm, 35mm, and sometimes my 17mm. I try to keep a tripod handy just in case.Feedback
Be patient. Newborns set the schedule and you often have to stop and wait for them to feed. Keep them warm, use natural light when possible - newborns do not like flashes! :) In this case, the baby had 3 older siblings so he was used to noise, but often I'll have white noise playing in the background to keep the baby soothed and quiet. Have as few blanket or setting changes as possible and most of the time, wrapping them tightly helps a lot. Obviously, this baby broke the mould on most of that!
