I took this photo at the world famous Banzai Pipeline on the northshore of Oahu. I shot this image with my Sony Alpha a6000, Seafrogs salted line housing and a 55mm Sony lens. This capture was so inspiring to me because as an upcoming bodyboarder in my early years I've always wanted to freeze my memories of this great surf break. The way the wave positions itself on the horizon and how the sun sets behind it from the West provide the natural elements to make shots like this possible. Being out in the ocean takes a lot of stamina just to stay afloat which is why this photo means so much to me.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the world famous Banzai Pipeling on the northshore of Oahu, Hawaii.

Time

This was taken at around 5pm as the sun was setting to the West creating the beautiful natural backlighting.

Lighting

Speaking of lighting, the natural positioning of the wave moving to the shore in an angle aligns perfect to the sun as it sets. With just enough backlight, you can see the color of the wave dress itself with an emerald green color which is very pleasing to the eyes. Timing is everything.

Equipment

I used a Sony Alpha a6000, 55mm Sony lens, Seafrogs saltedline water housing to capture this photo.

Inspiration

In my earlier years growing up I've always wanted to freeze the moments I've had surfing here. Since this break is so iconic and world known for its power, beauty, hollow tubes and shallow reef about 6 feet below, there is nowhere in the world quite like it. Everytime you're out there your adrenaline is pumping and composure is your best friend. This is a very memorable moment that I captured.

Editing

Yes, in fact I wanted to bring out the crest and color of the wave to the focus and attention of my audience. The colors during golden hour at the Banzai Pipeline is something I can't explain. It always amazed me how the natural elements come together to flrm the beauty of the wave. I wanted to bring this out in my post-processing.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry my 210mm and 500mm telephoto lens so I can shoot surf from the land, however in the water I use my 55mm lens and get close to the action.

Feedback

For those that want to go out there and capture some waves, I would say to get and stay in shape as swimming and positioning yourself for the shot is very important. Also the waves can break right on your head which is not a good feeling and being able to stay composed out there is key. Make sure you purchase a good and trustworthy housing as you don't want your camera getting wet with salt water. Other than that, have fun and shoot away!
