Location
I took this shot in my backyard at home. It’s actually a self portrait. Lately I have been doing a fair few of them just to learn more about posing and compositions.Time
I was doing some online study prior to taking this shot. It would have been about 4-5pm. The idea came to me mid-study. I suppose I needed a minute to procrastinate.Lighting
I wanted some even, natural lighting for this portrait. I didn’t have any reflectors or soft boxes available, so I was really counting on good natural lighting. In my case, it was a grey, cloudy day. The lighting was nice and even for some good portraits.Equipment
Just the bare minimum was used here: my camera and my tripod. My camera set up was the Nikon D800 with the 2.4 24-70mm Nikkor lens. I use a Manfrotto tripod. I just set the camera on self timer so I had enough time to pose.Inspiration
Sometimes a wave of inspiration comes over me for taking portraits. In this case, it was a grey day and I thought the big trees in my backyard would make for a nice textured background. I don’t always have a model on hand to make my shots come to life. I marched out there and took photos until I was satisfied. Taking self portraits is one of my favorite ways to try a new portrait composition.Editing
I use Lightroom for my post-processing. In this shot, my face was originally a bit over exposed. I brought down the exposure to compensate. I smoothed the skin, enhanced the detail of the eyes. I patched some of the background up as the trees did not completely fill the background originally. In my camera bag
I take the bare minimum with me if I can. A good amount of my photos are taken on hikes and during travel. I don't want to worry about having too much gear to carry. I will bring my Nikon D800 and my 2.4 24-70mm Nikkor lens. I will bring about 5 SD cards with me as well. Sometimes my Manfrotto tripod gets added to the mix for long exposures. Those are my bare necessities.Feedback
As far as self portraits go, it can be a bit tricky to get the camera focused correctly. I place an object where I plan to stand in front of the camera. I use this object to manually focus my camera on the area where I will be standing. I get more consistently clear photos this way. Also, I will take 100+ photos to make sure I have captured some great shots to edit later. Sometimes I surprise myself with which shot will be my favorite after post-processing. Another thing I would suggest is simply trying to make good use of grey days. Especially if you are relying on natural light. Cloudy days tend to bring even light for photos.
