Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Socorro Islands, off the west coast of Mexico.

Time

I took this at around 8.30pm, I had seen the sun set the previous evening and the colours were spectacular. So the evening I took this shot I sat waiting on the top deck of a boat, waiting for the perfect light. And it showed up!

Lighting

Nothing much to say about the lighting, it was all down to the sun and the clouds. I can't take any credit for that.

Equipment

I shot this with a Nikon D500, a Tamron 18-400mm lens F3.5-6.3 VC, Handheld at F11, 18mm, 1/60th of a second, ISO 640

Inspiration

I was on a scuba diving expedition, the previous night the sunset was stunning. By the time I had gone to grab my camera though, the light had gone. So this particular evening I couldn't help but sit on deck and wait for the perfect moment.

Editing

I didn't do much processing at all with this image, the light was and colours were pretty much perfect. All I did was increase the vibrancy and saturation slightly.

In my camera bag

When I'm traveling abroad I pack as light as possible, due to the weight allowance on the airlines. So I typically pack my Nikon D500 with 18-400mm lens, it pretty much covers everything from landscape to wildlife shots. A Sony rx100 mark iv, which I use for underwater photography and videography, a cracking little camera. And also a GoPro Hero4 Silver. With a bunch of batteries and memory cards, as I won't chance missing a shot if possible.

Feedback

The key to this simple shot was just waiting for the perfect moment as the sun set, I had seen the light and colours the previous evening so I knew it would be a great shot. It was just a matter of being patient, and capturing the moment.
