I was shooting the Milky Way in Monument Valley on a World Pix-Wayne Pinkston Photo Workshop and I got this great moment. I was shooting a pano of the entire landscape when a car in the distance lit up one of the Mittens with its headlights. I thought this resulting single frame image was really cool. What do you think?

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Monument Valley, Utah.

Time

This was taken around 10pm at night as we waited for the Milky Way to rise over the mountains.

Lighting

Yes! We had just finished shooting the blue hour and were waiting for the Milky Way to rise when a Car in the distance turned down a road and with its headlights briefly illuminated the left mitten of the famous Mittens of Monument Valley. I quickly shot a picture as the light created a perfect moment. I couldn't believe how well this turned out!

Equipment

Tripod, Canon Mark IV. 16-35 Lens.

Inspiration

We were on a WorldPix workshop to Southern Utah with the plan of shooting the Milky Way as it graced several iconic southwest locations. The cool thing about WorldPix photographic workshops is we give all the proceeds away to charity with the idea that we are using the beauty of a region as a type of "natural resource" to help the people. For this workshop we are helping local native american charities as well as an orphanage in Arizona. I get inspired thinking about the causes we are helping as I'm shooting...trying to get the best photo I can to help the people. In this moment I was able to capture a shot I hadn't planned but I was prepared to shoot as it happened. Life is like that sometimes!

Editing

Not much processing here. This is one frame with perfect lucky lighting. I worked on the horizon a little to make sure it represented what I saw in the moment.

In my camera bag

It depends on the venue. My safari bag is very different than my astrophotography set up. On this night I was using my Mark 4 with several great lenses for night photography (14 prime, 16-35, 24-70), tripod, release cable and Pano Rail.

Feedback

Get out there and shoot! Sometimes the best moments just happen, but you have to be there to get them! Please reach out to me if you would be interested in joining us on a WorldPix Safari. I can put you on our list and let you know what we have planned.
