Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo using my Nikon 85mm Macro lens. The orchid we had made this incredible shape, and I thought this would make an interesting image. Shot only with natural, ambient light. Granted, it is in front of our window, so there is a natural backlighting aspect to this image.

Time

Late morning, nothing special.

Lighting

Already mentioned. I will say that I did use a circular polarizer, but that I like to use natural lighting as much as possible in all my shots.

Equipment

Nikon D7100, set to “flower” or macro setting. Then I used my Nikon 85mm macro lens to get this shot. This was handheld, and I should have used a tripod.

Inspiration

The beauty found right in my living room.

Editing

For this one, no. I don’t do much to begin with. I look to recreate what my eyes saw, and try to use the camera to capture just what I saw. It’s rare that I even try to retouch a photo. Again, only if the camera didn’t capture what my eyes saw. Even when I do retouch, it’s not to make it super slick, just to compensate for what the camera or my skills lacked in matching what my eyes saw at that point in time.

In my camera bag

The above mentioned, various lenses including a 35mm, 70-300mm, 18-55mm, and my only non Nikon, a Rikonon 14mm. Also a flash to slave to my on camera as master. Two tripods, one older one that I now use as my flash stand, and my new one with a fluid swivel head, by Bower (I believe). Great bargain of a tripod, just as good as those that cost 10 times more! So far, that is! We’ll see over time.

Feedback

Just be observant to the opportunities around you. This shot came from me challenging myself to do an in home photo safari. The orchid was the quick winner. Then it was just start taking test pics until I liked the composition in the viewfinder. Then, I took another 60+ photos to get to this one that I was happy to share with you.
