Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Folly Beach,South Carolina (a.k.a.) "The Edge of America"

Time

I had been out shooting at several locations all day,so i didn't actually arrive at the beach until late afternoon (about 5:30-6:00 just before the sun started to set.

Lighting

The sun was just starting to set which gave me some nice cool lighting to work with.

Equipment

I took this shot handheld with my Nikon coolpix p100 camera with no special lens or set-up

Inspiration

Even though this is my most popular and award winning photograph,it was not my original plan. I had planned to shoot the seashell with the tide washing over it and using a long exposure for effect.However,in my haste to make it to the location before the sun went down,I neglected to bring my tripod.After a few minutes of asking myself "Now What",creative spark kicked in and I chose to shoot what was right there in front of me,the sunset.After several shots were taken,I began to review them and even though they were good,I noticed a large empty space in my photos.Suddenly,the idea of using the seashell to fill in the empty space hit,so I got as low as i could (actually laying flat on the sand) and began popping off as many shots as I could before I lost the light.The result is now known as "Seashell at Sunset'

Editing

I normally take several hours to post process my photographs in order to get the best image I can,but I actually had to do very little to this shot.a very fine adjustment to the hue and sharpness was all!

In my camera bag

I try to keep things as simple as possible when it comes to my camera pack.My Nikon coolpix p100 camera,extra battery,extra memory card,lens wipes and a gobie . I don't like the feeling of being weighed down,and don't like to carry anything i don't really need.( I honestly do usually carry my tripod)

Feedback

Remember your tripod and have a plan "B". Have a shot in mind,but always keep your eyes and mind open because sometimes things don't always go as originally planned.Remember should the shoot just not work out,chances are you can always go back later and try again.
