Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from my front yard, I'm very lucky to have such nice scenic view looking from my living room window.

Time

It was taken about an hour before sunset, stormy clouds come rolling in and I decided it would be good time to take some landscape images. I was lucky that it was raining in the distance below darkest clouds, so I got nice little rainbow.

Lighting

Well, mother nature is responsible for ligthing for this photo, I was just there to take it. The only thing I needed to be careful is not to blow highlights so I used gradient filter for sky.

Equipment

I used Canon 600D with Sigma 10-20 mm, and Cokina graduated 0.6 ND filter

Inspiration

I'm always on a lookout for nice landscape and nature images, and since this was taken in my front yard, as soon as I noticed great light, beautiful clouds and rainbow, I was able to rush indoors, grab my camera and gear and start shooting (of course I have all ready just in case I need it quickly).

Editing

I usually don't do much post-processing (just crop, correction of colors, contrast and sometimes HDR) but for this one I had to clone out some houses that were in woody area because I wanted it to be pure nature image. I also boosted contrast more and corrected color of wheat to match color it had when photo was taken (it was too blue).

In my camera bag

With my Canon 600D I always pack my wide angle Sigma 10-20, 100 mm macro and 55-250 mm (Canon also). Depending on situation I sometimes take Cokin set of filters and ND variable filter if I plan to take some long exposure shots. Gorilla tripod is always in bag also, but I usually take standard tripod too.

Feedback

Always look around you even if you do something else, you never know when will mother nature put up great show for you. And always have your equipment near you, or easily accessible. Knowing your equipment is also important so you can easily and quickly set it up for taking that one shot.
