Location
This was taken at Lake Tipsoo near Mt. Rainier, WA.Time
We were walking around late morning, which was perfect in our case. The cloud cover erased almost all shadows that would be stretching across the land right then. Also the briskness created a unique look along with the clothing choice for the day.Lighting
Surprisingly this was 100% natural lighting. Luckily we did have constant cloud cover, so that helped immensely. No fill, flash, bounce or anything. Ashley happened to be sitting in the perfect spot in between shots, I couldn't not capture this candid moment.Equipment
I believe I simply had a 50mm on my 70D. I find the simpler the setup the more you can be challenged and learn to use a little to get a lot.Inspiration
There was a bunch of close friends up in the mtns for an engagement session when I look over to see Ashley (one half of the engagement) randomly chilling on a rock. The background, her look, the wind in her hair all fell in perfect balance with each other.Editing
I did minimal work as the ooc image was already veddy nice. I removed a few rogue hairs in her face, did a general color correcting, and removed a bit of shadow around her eyes.In my camera bag
When going on a destination photo adventure like this one (we had to park and walk a ways down a trail to get to the lake) I make sure I pack my bag and vest with my main lenses: 50mm, 85mm, and a wide 10mm. Along with a couple extra batteries (my battery grip has been a life saver), my memory card wallet, Speedlite (always cause you never know), extra flash batteries, and business cards (always keeping that hustle alive!).Feedback
I'd have to say if you're looking at doing outdoor portraiture be prepared to shoot a lot and play with your settings. My cam is always on full manual, which can be a struggle at first but helps you know your camera better in the end. Look for days with decent cloud cover so you have little to no bright sunny blowouts either on your subject or elsewhere in the image. Now in this instance it was an accidental happenstance, but have your subject wear something that pops from the background. It's just one more thing that helps bring the attention where it should be.
