Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a local dance studio (Powerhouse Dance Company) here in London, Ontario.

Time

This photo was taken in dance studio to have full control over the lighting in the space.

Lighting

This photo was all about capturing the light in the shadows.By having two side lights and an over head light to just highlight the certain parts of the body we were able to capture this strong image.

Equipment

This image was captured with Canon 5D Mark III, Sigma 50mm and 3 continuous lights.

Inspiration

The simplicity of B&W images is what inspired me to try and capture the light within the shadows. Dance is a form of art all on its own. I wanted to capture a different side of that by only highlighting certain parts of the body depending on the dance move that was being done.

Editing

Yes I had to blend the background a bit so you didn't see anything behind them. However we had a large enough back drop minimal editing was applied.

In my camera bag

I have two sets of equipment I normally go around with. My natural, on location bag that holds my 5D Mark III, canon 24-105, and sigma 50mm. Depending on the session I will also bring 2 external flashes with triggers to create specific lighting if needed. My studio bag has 2 strobes and 3 continuous lights. Depending on the kind of studio session I am going into depends on what will be coming that day of course.

Feedback

For this kind of image I found continuous lighting to be key. This allowed us to have full control over the setting. Remember to take your time when setting up your subject and the lights. Watch where the light is falling off your subject. Make sure your lights aren't illuminating your subject entirely but rather just the edges to create a more dramatic effect. Also, remember to not be scared to try something totally different and out of the box. Sometime the best outcomes can be mistakes so don't be scared to mess up but embrace the faults and learn from everything you photograph to grow.
