Behind The Lens

Location

I had gone to a game reserve with a fellow budding photographer. We planned this day to 'play' with our cameras, trying to recap on the famous trio, aperture, shutter speed and iso.

Time

It was close to sunset.. the lighting was just beautiful as we sat watching these majestic animals..

Lighting

It was approaching sunset, I remember having to adjust the iso so that I could keep the natural light reflected from the lake..

Equipment

I used my trusty Nikon 3200. With the standard distance 18-55mm lens the camera comes with. I really dislike using the flash as I like to keep the lighting as natural as possible. It was the first time that I shot at a game reserve, and loved the challenge of keeping the camera on manual setting.. was a wonderful experience.

Inspiration

It was such an amazing experience to capture this beautiful scene. When I saw these two hippos turning to fight I could not miss the opportunity to capture it.. I guess in photography it's always comes down to being at the right place at the right time.. and be quick to capture.. don't lose the moment.

Editing

I like to keep my pictures as natural as possible. So the only editing I might do is to crop a scene.. I believe there is natural beauty in nature, that one should appreciate in its raw form.

In my camera bag

Just the two standard lens that comes with the camera, 200-55mm and 18-55mm. And I carry a tripod just in case..

Feedback

Patience. And keep your camera at readiness. Try to keep your camera on manual, ensure that you adjust for optimum lighting depending on what you want.. I wanted to bring out more of the character in my shots so I adjusted to get a full depth of field and played around with my shutter speed and iso to get what I wanted. My final advice is 'play'... its the only way we learn..
