Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Ripley castle in North Yorkshire. The building, the grounds and decor inside this place is just stunning!

Time

I think i took this one around midday on the 4rd April 2016. We took a lot of images on the day in various rooms but this one really brought out the character and emotion of this old castle.

Lighting

This room although having large windows i remember it being quite dark so we threw some light onto the bride with some LED video lights. One off to the left behind the sofa to light her face and another off to the right to put some highlights into the dress. The candle stick lights around the room provided some ambience although i did have an issue compositionally with the lights behind the brides head as i was down as low as possible and didn't really have a lot more room to around the other furnature.

Equipment

Shot handheld with Canon 6D and Canon 24-105L lens, 250sec F4 ISO1600. 2 LED video lights.

Inspiration

I think just to give the feel of an old image, fairytale like, but mainly to show off the beautiful bride in this stunning room. Like i said before, I took lots of images around this building but i felt the need to get down low and shoot up at this one and i think it worked out okay!

Editing

I always shoot in RAW (doesn't everyone?) so post-processing is a must! I normally do most of my editing in Lightroom but for something special like this one i will take into photoshop too. I think i may have done a small amount of dodge and burning and possibly a radial filter to draw attention to the brides face. I then used the detail extractor from the NIK collection to enhance the furnishings around the room.

In my camera bag

Which bag?! Ha! I have 2 digital DSLR's, a Canon 6D and a 5D MKIII. I also have a Rolleiflex SL35 with 50mm lens for shooting film. Lens wise i have a Canon 85mm f1.8, 16-35mm, 24-105mm f1.4, 70-200mm f2.8LII, 24-70mm f2.8LII, Tamron 90mm f2.8 Macro, Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART. 3 600ex-rt speedlites. Rotolight. Various triggers, filters, reflectors and other bits and bobs. I also have a set of Elinchrom BRX 500 Studio lights which i hook up to a Godox battery pack for shooting outdoors to overpower the sun. I think that covers the important stuff! :)

Feedback

Best advice i could give is make sure you have enough room to get the composition you desire. For me i wanted to get down low for this one which worked out nicely. Even though we had some video lights it was still quite dark so i bumped up the ISO a bit, i could have slowed my shutter a bit but i was in an awkward position and the 6D can handle the noise in images at this ISO quite well. Other than that i would just say move around, try different angles and tell your bride/model what you want them to do and you'll capture a great image! Thank and good luck!
