Beautiful black and white night photo!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point. We lived in the Bay area for 4 years and I loved everything about it.

Time

This was taken between 10pm and 11pm. I was hoping for slightly better fog, but this turned out quite nice. Adapting to what is available is important, you bend nature to your will.

Lighting

Originally the image was color, but the colors seem to wash out with the fog. Turning this into black and white helped the light spread and not smear along to fog.

Equipment

Nikon D50 with a Nikon 70-300vr. It was a weird choice for night landscape photo, but the lights were pretty bright and i wanted to get trails and fill so i had to leave the shutter open a little longer.

Inspiration

It's an amazing bridge. Most photos tend to focus on fog or the city. I wanted to get something a little different. I took the towards the city pictures as well, but to me this one was different from others i have seen and I preferred it.

Editing

It was an early lower end digital camera (that i loved) so it's low light was not the best. I chad to convert it to black and white and help the tones a little. I also had to do a little sharpening and noise reduction. I think that last part is a little easier with a black and white image.

In my camera bag

At the time this photo was taken I had a Nikon D50, Nikon 50mm 1.8, Nikon 70-300vr, and a Nikon 18-35. Since then I had sold the D50 and the 18-35, and gotten a Nikon D7000 and a Tokina 11-16 2.8. I have also recently added an Olympus om-d e-m10 mark ii to give the mirrorless genre a shot.

Feedback

Unless you live in downtown San Fransisco you can never be sure what you will get when you go to the golden gate. The one thing you can be sure of is it will be cool and WINDY. Bring a really sturdy tripod if you want to shoot longer exposures. Really I can't wait to go back again to do more with it.
