BLIND HELPING BLIND This particular emotional shot was taken in the Princely City of Junagadh - Gujarat - India the place where I live and work as a full time Mathematics Teacher. Normally Cameras and Cell Phones are not allowed in the school But on that particular day of Tuesday December 24th 2013 I had a cell phone in my Pocket.( Cant remember why ? ) School was over and I was coming back home on my bike with my kids. The road was busy and traffic as usual chaotic. Our bike was speeding on the road and suddenly I saw two blind friends wearing white holding their Canes were trying to cross the road. Normally no one in this world is interested to help other, every one is busy minding their own life and own stuff, and here we have a scene of a BLIND HELPING BLIND. It was a great shot. I realized the very moment, but very hard to capture. We in India drive on left hand side and those two were on the opposite side, I have to drive against traffic, control the bike with one hand and take the shot with other hand. There was no time to stop... no time to zoom..... as I was using Cell Phone Camera..... no time to compose... it was touch and go......Glad I was able to nail the shot.Time
Afternoon traffic is very chaotic in our city......The only chance I had was to capture the moment from the speeding bike when we cross them.... there was a liberty to slow the bike near the subject and exactly this what which was done. As soon as we reached near them I took the shot driving the bike with right hand and holding the Camera with left. It was only one shot, but the moment was captured. Back at home I transfered the image to my PC and was glad to see two friends smiling guiding each other wearing white cloths on the road. Shot was taken around 1.26 afternoon.Lighting
December is the month of winter in our country...... afternoon light is not so harsh, real life shots are mostly taken is natural life.... so was this ... nothing unusual about lighting.Still some nice highlights and some shadows are there in the image.Equipment
This particular shot was taken with MIcromax A110 8 mp rear camera cell phone. No lens, No tripod, no flash, nothing simply point & shoot.Inspiration
Our world is very cruel, very selfish, here no one is interested in helping others. On that busy road, On that particular day, two blind friends were helping each other to cross road. They were not worried, they were not tense, they did not ask for any help though no one was interested to help them, in fact they were helping themselves, supporting each other using hand on shoulder for guidance, showing the world their confidence, smiling in the process telling the world around them that we do not need your help. We are happy living the life given to us by Almighty God. There are people in this world who are not satisfied with what they have, always asking for more, always demanding more, trying to steal from others, trying to earn using wrong methods and what for ? 50-80 years of our life is spent in the Rat race, in the end what we have is only regrets. And here were two blind friends setting and example. Their world is dark, they do not have family, there is no one to help them and yet they are happy in living the life. It was a moment to capture.Editing
Cell phone images are tricky to process, the challenge was to bring out the emotion and appeal. The first thing I decided was to convert the image to black & white. No colors in their life was the idea. still the image was flat as a snap shot. The emotion was not there. After trying variation finally I decided to use HDR filter and Bang..... the final result came out to my satisfaction. Rest was to simply crop and resize and save.In my camera bag
Normally I shoot with Canon EOS 350d DSLR and 18-55mm kit lens or Canon 50mm f/1.8 and this is all I have. No tripods, No other lenses. I have one more Canon sx520 hs Bridge Super Zoom which I mostly use for birding. But my all time Combo is 350d + 50 mm.Feedback
Street photography is an art by itself. I have seen many photographer use shooting from the hips technic it is fun and challenge both. The subjects are not steady they move constantly you have to be very quick. Get familiar with your gear, Always use Aperture priority mode, ISO always 100 , go for the fastest shutterspeed, if you do not have zoom like me, then get close to your subject, wait for the right moment, let the subject be natural and last but not least never ever let them see your camera, because as soon as they see the camera their expression becomes artificial. shoot natural, shoot real, and do not process your images more then necessary. Let it be real. Happy Hunting........ see ya in the streets.
