Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my college studio with my friends Sean and Annmarie. This was one of my first photo shoots but the couple are very happy together and in love, I feel this is reflected in the shot I got on the day.

Time

As a photography student this photo was taken in the afternoon while at college.

Lighting

I used a soft box mounted on the boom and raised it high above the couple's heads. I feel this made the light fall on the couple nice and evenly.

Equipment

For this shot I actually borrowed a cannon EOS 1100d as my Sony doesn't have a hot shoe adaptor for the lighting set-up. I shot at 1/125, f5.6 and 100 iso.

Inspiration

I was looking to capture the couple as natural as possible without the shots looking staged. I did my best to make them at ease while shooting and had a laugh and joke with them throughout. This gave me great result with lots of true and happy expressions from the guys.

Editing

Usually I like to edit my photos for effect but these turned out good without me having to alter anything.

In my camera bag

As a first year student my equipment is limited. I always have my Sony nex-5 with my 18mm-200mm lens (this covers me for most situations that arise) my tripod and a spare battery.

Feedback

The best advise I could give is make sure your clients are relaxed and remind them to have fun, for most people (me included) forcing a smile doesn't look good on camera but if you can have them relaxed and enjoying the shoot your photo's will reflect this. I also tried a technique someone advised me to try by telling the couple to face each other, close their eyes and picture something that makes them happy or proud then on the count of three open their eyes. I took the shot capturing the moment they opened their eyes n looked loving with natural smiles at each other.
